How Long Should a Resume Summary Be?

I don’t have to make this stuff up!  This week we received an information security resume that carried a summary consisting of 8 sentences and a total of 20 lines.

On my desk sits The Merriam-Webster Dictionary published many years ago.  I turn to my paper dictionary from time-to-time and today was one of those times.  I wanted to know what the dictionary had to say about the word summary.

Summary:  Covering the main points briefly
Synonym for Summary:  Succinct

Based on the dictionary definition of the word summary, I don’t think 8 sentences and 20 lines of text or 1/3 of the first page of someone’s resume qualifies as a summary.

If you want the recipient of your resume to actually read your resume, consider a summary that is actually a summary.  Try 2-4 lines instead of 20 lines.  Now that’s a summary.
