Leadership - What is it?...A Business Leader Shares His Thoughts

A business leader whom I have known and respected for many years put his day on hold to speak with me about his ideas around leadership.

To put this conversation into perspective, this business leader is in his mid-50s.  Let’s say that he has been around the block a few times.   To give a little more background on this business leader, he has just lost a job due to an acquisition.  If you didn't already guess, he was on the wrong side of the acquisition.

I’ll keep this one short and sweet.  This is what the business leader shared from his personal experience.

“Leaders Inspire.  They inspire through communication.  Leaders take you somewhere.  They connect their words to their actions.  Disconnect words and actions and nobody will ever trust you again.  While managers tell you what to do, you follow leaders.  They blaze the trail and inspire others to follow.”

These words come from a man whose life has just been turned upside down.  He explained how a very senior executive from the company that acquired his company had recently had feet on the ground in acquired company’s office.  The senior executive told everybody at the acquired company that their jobs were safe and they had nothing to be concerned about.

The next day, 24 hours later, 6 people were laid off…then 3…then 2…then 2 more…then 3 more yesterday.

The gap between this senior executive’s words and his actions was huge.  Does anybody at the acquired company trust anything that comes out of this senior executive’s mouth from this moment forward?  Not a chance.

Trust has been destroyed and in this case, it can’t be rebuilt.'s Security Recruiter Blog
