I’m Sick of My Job…Should I Quit to Find a New Job?

This question comes to me from time-to-time.  The answer I've given for many years is the answer I continue to give.

Should I Quit My Current Job to Find a New Job?

For some reason that I won’t attempt to explain, there is a psychological advantage to having a job when you look for a new job.  There is something about being somebody else’s employee that makes the next employer look at you in a different way than if you’re a free agent with no place to call home.

Unemployed...Trying To Find a Job

I’m not suggesting that that you can never again find a job if you lose a job or you choose to quit a job.  What I’m suggesting is that if you have the luxury of having a job while you’re looking for your next career move, keep the job you have.

If you’re not employed when you engage in a first interview, there is nearly a 100% chance that the interviewer will start your interviewer by asking you what you’re currently doing.  They’ll want to know why you’re not employed if your resume shows a gap.  

Why allow your interview to start on a bad note if you don’t have to?

Do Your Homework

A far better alternative to quitting your job to find a new job is to invest in yourself to get professional help to determine why your current job isn't working out. 

It is very important to slow down to figure out exactly why your current job isn't working out before you jump ship.  Sometimes, the reason your current role isn't working is crystal clear.

Other times, there will be an issue or a group of issues that are eating at you but you can’t quite put your finger on the issues that are causing you to have a lack of engagement with your current professional role.  Before taking the risk of moving from the frying pan to the fire, stop and clearly identify why your current job isn't working out.
