The Best Answer to an Interview Question You Don’t Know How to Answer Is...

This isn’t the first time a client has come back to me after a candidate I’ve presented has interviewed telling me that the overall interview had gone well but there was a question or two in the technical interview that the candidate didn't know how to answer.

This is the second time in the recent past that a client came back to me telling me that they wanted to hire my candidate because the candidate had been honest about what they didn't know.  The candidate's integrity was as important to both client's as their skill set...maybe even more important.

Many hiring decision makers will hire you if you don't know everything. However, if you act as if you know everything when you don't, you begin eroding your credibility before you're even hired into the new job.

How do you answer a question you don’t know the answer to in an interview?

Don't make up an answer. Be honest and admit that you don't know the answer.

Had my recent candidate made up an answer to a question he didn't know the answer to, he would have been eliminated from the interview process.
